Maruleng Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Tsheko Musolwa visits the Plastic view Informal Settlement, in Hoedspruit which was ravaged by a shack fire during the course of last night. Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 100 shacks were destroyed, leaving around 200 people affected.
The Disaster Management team is currently conducting a detailed assessment of the damage. Encouragingly, no injuries or fatalities were reported during or after the incident. The fire broke out in the early evening and residents stood on the side of the road watching their homes being engulfed by flames. The South African Police Services says an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
