Three young women from Botswana, aged between 20 and 23, have been rescued from an alleged human trafficking syndicate, South African media report.
The women were intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday while traveling from Botswana via South Africa and Nairobi. Investigators say they had been lured through social media with promises of lucrative jobs in Sierra Leone.
The operation was led by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, following alerts from the Botswana High Commission in Pretoria to INTERPOL to help trace the missing women.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify and dismantle the trafficking network behind the scam.
