The MEC responsible for Social Development in Limpopo, Ms Florence Radzilani has expressed utmost outrage, pain and disgust following the sexual assault of an 11-year-old minor allegedly by a 36-year old man at Zaaiplaas Policing area.
According to police reports, a 36-year-old man approached the young girl as she was on her way home after fetching water. He offered to assist her with pushing her wheelbarrow. As they neared her home, the suspect allegedly stopped and inappropriately touched and kissed the victim without her consent before fleeing the scene.
The victim reported the incident to her mother who quickly responded by confronting the suspect, who allegedly attempted to bribe her to drop the matter. The victim was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention, and a case of sexual assault has been opened. The matter has been transferred to the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for thorough investigation.
Reacting to the incident MEC Radzilani described the incident is a stark reminder of the many tragic cases we have seen across Limpopo, where minors are sexually attacked by men old enough to be their fathers. “Such acts are not only criminal but deeply violate the fundamental rights and dignity of our children. We condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms,”
said Radzilani
She emphasized that community involvement is crucial in addressing gender-based violence. “We call on community members to come forward with any information that can lead to the swift
apprehension of the suspect, who remains at large. We urge men in our communities to take a stand against gender-based violence and to actively expose their peers who perpetuate these heinous acts against our children,” added Radzilani
The Department of Social Development will continue to work tirelessly to ensure justice is served and to foster a society where children can grow without fear of violence or exploitation.
