TWO SUSPECTS DUE IN COURT FOR OPERATING BACKYARD GOLD

HAWKS NET SIX SOUTH AFRICAN MILITARY MEMBERS FOR CORRUPTION 

Two suspects aged 30 and 56 are expected to appear in the Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 May 2021 for operating a backyard gold refinery.

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team received a tip-off about people who were refining gold at their homes and followed it up.

The team pounced on the suspects and caught them right in the act.

During the operation, suspected gold bearing material was seized and will be taken for forensic examination.

Mining equipment such as electrical homemade gold refinery drums, gas bottles, blasting cartridges, spade, shovel and a scale were also seized.

The suspects were also found in possession of 38 sachets of dagga. Investigation to trace other outstanding suspects is ongoing.
