Police in Mpumalanga arrested a 30-year-old male nurse and his 52-year-old mother in connection with the brutal assault of a 12-year-old girl. Pictures of the girl, with bruises on her face have been widely circulated on social media.

On Saturday, 06 March 2021, the suspects, Siphosethu Sean Nkuna 30-year-old as well as his mother, Beauty Mercy Nkosi 52, allegedly assaulted the girl and as a result, police reacted promptly after the matter was brought before them by the victim herself and apprehended the pair.

Siphosethu, a local male nurse, claimed that he was disrespected by the girl hence the assault, while, Nkosi is said to have pinned the girl down during the incident. Nkuna claimed he was teaching her a lesson for being disrespectful, but according to the law, this amounts to assault, as no one has the right to inflict physical pain on a child. She (the girl) only managed to report the matter to police on Monday, 08 March 2021, when she came across a police patrol vehicle and then informed the officers about her ordeal.

Police then took the girl to the hospital for medical assistance and a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was duly registered on her behalf.

The suspects have already appeared before the local Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court after their arrest and they both made bail. They will re-appear before the same court on 15 April 2021.

Police in Mpumalanga would like to reiterate that we all have an equal responsibility to protect women and children. It is disappointing how in this day and age, individuals who should have acted responsibly neglected their roles and instead engaged in an unlawful violent act against a minor. On that note, police call upon everyone to bring their part in protecting the vulnerable especially children.
