Late Gilbert Lesiba Matsetela from Limpopo was a colonel for South Africa police Services for 29 years. He started working at Kgapane police station and moved to Littleton police , where he was promoted to be the head of intelligence from 2010 to 2018 at OR Thambo International airport. He was given award for Detective of the year and his story was published on mail & guardian newspaper.
Around 2018 Gilbert applied for post in Mpumalanga Archenhoek as cluster commander. According to the source information Gilbert was given a test to gather and solve insolvent case at Archenhoek police station and he managed to crack them.
The suspect on the case was identified and classified as dangerous and armed person. According to our source who didn’t want to be named , Gilbert and two other males officers whom alleged to be Mnisi and Hlongwane and a female officer were involved in the case.
The team plan was that the lady should distract suspect by calling him by his name and give him a hug as if she knows him , then they will be behind as the suspect was very dangerous.
Everything went according to plan it’s alleged that while Gilbert was handcuffing one hand of the suspect and one of the officer in the team shot Colonel from behind on a close range , 6 times with SAPS Rifle R5 and was left him bleeding. It’s alleged that the Rifle wasn’t signed out by the accused officers.
It’s alleged the accused officers took his service gun and cellphone to make it look like robbery , they thought he was dead , however he had other phone which he later used to call for help. He then called Captain Mohale from OR Tambo and his wife Nthabaleng where he allegedly told them everything. Colonel passed away after few days at Netcare hospital mailpark.
The officer who was handling the case was removed, it’s alleged that he was misleading and difeating ends to justice and Mr Khuba was appointed and he asked for some time as the case was involving high ranking officers who allegedly ordered the hit on colonel Gilbert Matsetela
They case was finally handed to prosecutor in September 2020 , No arrest was made ,not even questioning to the suspects. Neither Prosecutor or police communicated with the family about the investigation or the outcome
Neither Minister or any South African police management bothered to vist or attended the funeral service Colonel Gilbert. All what the family need is justice and they are appealing to minister Bheki Cele to assist for them to get closure.
