Unions in the Limpopo public health sector are set to meet on Monday to discuss what their collective next course of action will be following the provincial department of health’s announcement that employees will now go on an unpaid lunch hour.
The National Public Service Workers Union’s provincial Labour Relations Organiser Risimati Chavalala says the meeting will be attended by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union; Public Servants Association and the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa, among others.
Chavalala says the employer does not care about the work that Emergency Medical Services personnel and nurses do and has warned that members of the public will be negatively affected.
He says their members will now immediately go on the unpaid lunch hour, but says they will not return to their post even if there is an emergency during their break.
