October is declared a month of transport safety in South Africa, the Department of Transport & Community Safety is hosted a district Taxi Lekgotla in Mopani. Lekgotla is a platform for leaders of taxi associations to engage with government on ways to make the taxi industry to be economically viable and accessible to all communities.
The district Lekgotla is held in preparation for the upcoming provincial lekgotla scheduled for next week. MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said one of the key topics for the Lekgotla is around the professionalization of the taxi industry and improving customer care.
“Minibus taxis remain the backbone of public transport and the service of choice in most rural areas, townships and semi-urban areas.” She said that hurts the reputation of the industry and appealed to taxi association leaders to always find amicable ways to resolve their differences.
The Executive Mayor Cllr Pule Shayi, Transport MMC Japisa Mathonsi, the Mayor of Greater Giyani Municipality Cllr Basani Shivambu are also attending the Lekgotla, which is held on the backdrop of Transport Month under the theme: “Together shaping the future of transport.”
